A society for everyone: Global Health Society’s welcome event.
“Whenever we speak about that (Global Health); we speak of anything that relates to or influences healthcare” Alexa Zamfir, current President of King’s Global Health Society told iMPAK. The scope of Global Health goes beyond physical wellbeing, to name a few, Global Health encompasses issues from refugee crisis, mental health, up until this year’s main focus; climate change.
“Anything to do with healthcare, and what we can do to improve healthcare” - Alexa.
The society has 150 members, both undergraduates and postgraduates, from various faculties. Touching upon Global Health issues could come from different perspectives such as medicine, public policy, law, or anything that could affect international affairs and the wellbeing of global citizens; hence, the society encourages everyone who share the same interests to join, irrespective of their background.
Alexa described this year’s main goal to be ‘growth’. “[The society] is trying to get out there” she added, by providing different opportunities for students. Though this society is the first point of contact for Global Health students, the society extends to students from other departments as well, as their degrees might relate to the field of Global Health. Aside from discussions, career and partnership opportunities are provided to further support their members.
Efficiency
More student engagement is considered a successful outcome in the society, in which was reflected with the impeccable number of members in the society. Moreover, the society aims to establish more partnerships with King’s societies. Apart from achievements within the King’s community, the society has proudly established an external partnership with Polygeia, UK’s student-run Global Health Think Tank, whom recently held the 2019 Polygeia Annual Conference at King’s. The event turnout was high, with many students presenting their research.
The society follows a specific trend on global health, this depends upon recent news and conferences. “This is also part of our job to give awareness to students of what’s going on” Alexa added.

Sustainability
Having the goal to keep everyone informed and working with more societies are some of the ways the Global Health society engages more members. They have recently collaborated with other faculty societies; the Economics & Finance Society, PPE Society, Geography Society, Political Economy Society, and War Studies Society for the SSPP Winter Ball.
“and that [SSPP Winter Ball] was also when we gained a lot of other members from the other faculties” said Alexa.
When it comes to measures towards becoming environmentally friendly, the society will touch upon this sometime in the future if they decide to hold more events. All the societies events are conducted online or would just be a quick workshop, where no concerns of food wastes or cutleries are present.

Transparency
The society regularly shares monthly newsletters to their members. Currently, the society is working towards reactivating their website (https://kclglobalhealth.wordpress.com/) as an ‘extended’ version of their monthly newsletters, hopefully to be relaunched this year. The site will include general news regarding global trends and current King’s activities.
All of the activities held by the Global Health society are done online or through King’s resources such as on-campus classrooms. Regarding issues of budget plans, the society requires minimum fund, and even so all financial reports are disclosed through the KCLSU website for the public to be able to access.
